Introduction to Couples Counseling Using Relational Life Therapy

A 2-Hour Live Online Relationship Workshop

What if the problem isn't that you haven't tried hard enough—it's that you haven't been given the right relationship skills?

Many couples come to counseling after months or even years of having the same conversations, the same arguments, and the same frustrations. You may have even tried couples therapy before and walked away feeling like you talked about your problems but never really learned how to change the patterns creating them.

This live, two-hour online workshop introduces you to Relational Life Therapy (RLT)—a direct, practical approach to relationships that focuses on identifying the patterns that aren't working, taking accountability for your part in them, and learning specific skills for creating a healthier, more connected relationship.

This isn't about deciding who's right and who's wrong.

It's about understanding what happens between you—and learning how to do something different.

Who Is This Workshop For?

This workshop is designed for both individuals and couples. You do not need to attend with your partner to benefit.

It may be particularly helpful if you:

  • Keep having the same arguments over and over without resolution.

  • Feel like your partner doesn't hear, understand, or appreciate you.

  • Find yourself criticizing, becoming defensive, shutting down, withdrawing, controlling, people-pleasing, or walking on eggshells.

  • Love your partner but feel increasingly disconnected or resentful.

  • Struggle to communicate difficult feelings without the conversation escalating.

  • Have tried couples counseling before but feel like you talked a lot without actually changing anything.

  • Have worked with couples therapists but still don't understand why you keep falling back into the same patterns.

  • Have a partner who is unwilling or not ready to attend counseling, but you want to understand what you can change on your side of the relationship.

  • Want to improve your relationship before the problems become more serious.

  • Want to learn practical relationship skills without initially committing to ongoing couples therapy.

If Couples Therapy Hasn't Worked Before

Sometimes couples leave therapy believing, "We tried couples counseling and it didn't work."

But not all couples therapy approaches are the same.

Relational Life Therapy takes an active approach to identifying the behaviors and relationship patterns that are hurting connection. Instead of simply facilitating conversations between partners, RLT emphasizes accountability, relational skills, boundaries, emotional regulation, repair, and learning how to show up differently with one another.

The question becomes less:

"How do I get my partner to change?"

and more:

"What am I doing that contributes to this pattern—and what can I do differently?"

What Will You Learn?

During this two-hour introduction, you'll learn some of the foundational concepts and skills used in Relational Life Therapy.

You'll begin to understand why intelligent, caring people can repeatedly behave in ways that damage the relationships they value most.

We'll explore how to recognize your Adaptive Child—the part of you that learned ways of protecting yourself earlier in life but may now show up as defensiveness, withdrawal, anger, control, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or emotional shutdown.

You'll learn how to step out of those automatic reactions and respond from your Wise Adult instead.

You'll also learn to identify common losing strategies—behaviors we use when trying to get what we want from our partner that often create exactly the opposite result.

We'll work on practical skills for:

Regulating before reacting. Recognize when you're emotionally activated and learn how to slow the interaction down before saying or doing something that damages connection.

Understanding your relationship pattern. Look beyond what you're arguing about and identify the cycle underneath the argument.

Taking accountability. Learn to examine your contribution to the relationship without collapsing into shame or focusing exclusively on your partner's behavior.

Communicating with greater clarity. Learn how to tell the truth about what you feel, need, and want without criticism, contempt, blame, or attack.

Listening without immediately becoming defensive. Develop the ability to hear your partner's experience without needing to explain yourself or prove them wrong.

Setting healthy boundaries. Understand the difference between boundaries, walls, threats, and attempts to control another person.

Using timeouts effectively. Learn how to step away from an escalating conversation without abandoning it—and how to return and finish the conversation.

Repairing after conflict. Learn what meaningful accountability and repair can look like after you've hurt one another.

You Don't Need Your Partner to Attend

One of the most important principles you'll learn is that you cannot control your partner—but you can change how you participate in the relationship.

If your partner won't attend therapy, isn't ready to work on the relationship, or you've struggled to make progress together in previous couples counseling, you can attend this workshop on your own.

Changing one person's participation in a dysfunctional pattern can change the interaction itself.

For couples attending together, the workshop provides a shared language and framework for recognizing patterns and practicing healthier ways of responding to one another.

This Is More Than Communication Skills

Communication problems are often a symptom of a deeper relationship pattern.

You can learn the perfect communication script, but if you're emotionally triggered and operating from fear, resentment, defensiveness, control, or your Adaptive Child, that script can quickly disappear.

RLT asks you to go deeper:

What gets triggered in me?

What do I do when that happens?

How does my response affect my partner?

What does my partner do in response to me?

How do we keep recreating this cycle?

And ultimately:

What can I do differently?

What You'll Leave With

By the end of this two-hour workshop, my goal is for you to have a clearer understanding of why your relationship gets stuck, the role you may be playing in that pattern, and specific tools you can begin using differently.

You won't leave with a promise of a perfect relationship.

You'll leave with something much more useful:

A different way of understanding relationships—and practical skills for showing up differently in yours.
